Zunch PPC Expert Jeff Martin Responds to Googles Attack Against Third Party Click Fraud Auditors

Leading interactive marketing agency responds to Google’s lash out against third party click fraud consultants

DALLAS, Texas (PRWEB) August 10, 2006 – In a recent report and public statement by Google Business Product Manager for Trust and Safety Shuman Ghosemajumder, the search giant has laid claim that some third party click fraud consultants are using “defective methodolog[ies],” that inflates click fraud estimates and skews data. This seems like a reversal of the recent study conducted by Dr. Alexander Tuzhilin that determined Google’s efforts to combat click fraud were ‘reasonable’ i.e.: they met their contractual obligations.

“Just as Dr. Tuzhilin pointed out that there are inherit flaws in the PPC model which will prevent Google, or anyone else, from fully identifying and filtering click fraud, there are technologies in place which can prevent an advertiser or third party click fraud consultant from accurately accounting for all of the activity all of the time, “Zunch Director of Click Fraud and Pay Per Click Auditing Jeff Martin said. “Dr. Tuzhilin concluded that Google’s efforts in combating click fraud were reasonable, in light of the inherit limitations of the PPC model, equally reasonable are click fraud auditors efforts to bring click fraud activity to the surface.”

Ghosemajumder states that fictitious ad clicks recorded due to mischaracterizing events “may be the most significant flaw.” Simply put, a single user may be counted as more than one visitor by a third party auditing system when either of these common events occurs:
1. The user navigates away from the page (either by clicking deeper into the advertiser’s site or by navigating away) and uses their browser’s forward or back buttons to return to the page.
2. The user refreshes the landing page.

“The limitation here is imposed by the Web browser. Whether refreshing the page in question or navigating back and forth to it through the browser’s buttons--Web browsers, by design will retain the original information of the initial visit to the page,” Martin said.  “By not maintaining the same variables, the page could end up altered or not rendered at all. Because the original visiting information is stored by the Web browser, when a browser loads the page again it will appear as a normal visit to the page rather than just a return and will be counted accordingly.”

The Google report says in order to solve this problem third party click fraud consultants should rely on the “Google AdWords auto-tagging feature.” The problem is that the more an independent click fraud consultant relies on data provided by Google and their methodologies, the more the consultant loses their objectivity and the more their methodologies may become skewed.

“By using the auto-tagging feature, consultants would be relying on Google to tell them what a unique click is and what is not. This is at the very heart of click fraud auditing and the most significant means in which to hold Google, or any other PPC network, accountable. Because independent consultants must maintain objectivity and neutrality they cannot rely largely upon auto-tagging,” Martin said. “Independent consultants must rely on click stream data that is not contaminated or labeled by any PPC network as valid or invalid, unique or non unique. To not do so makes the consultant more of an extension of Google and their methodologies which is not the function of the consultant and defeats the purpose of third party auditing.”

When the inherit nature of browser technologies and the independent objective role that third party click fraud consultants provide is taken into consideration, one can assume their efforts and methodologies are reasonable.

“Shuman says Google may “perhaps help third-party auditing firms improve their methods.” Zunch highly encourages Google to be pro-active in working directly with independent consultants as they will continue to fill a vital role in educating PPC advertisers on the risks of advertising on the PPC model as they relate to click fraud, Martin said.   “Independent consultants also help in providing advertisers with the missing account activity information they can’t receive elsewhere.  It is in the best interest of advertisers and Google to do so.”

Study Reveals Consumers are Ready for Mobile Search Apps

By Todd Wasserman/BrandWeek

The market for mobile search is so new that analysts haven't yet put a dollar figure on it, but it could emerge as a lucrative advertising category, according to a new study by the Mobile Marketing Assn.

The MMA report shows that the technology—which puts search engine features on mobile phones—is catching on quickly: most cell phone users are interested in the service and a fair amount (41%) say mobile search ads would not have an adverse impact on their use of the service.

The survey, of 587 U.S. adults with cell phones, found that half of them who have not tried mobile search are interested in trying it over the next few months and 48% of current non-users expect to use mobile search at least once a week. Moreover, the demographic information on those who already use mobile search is compelling. Respondents with an annual income of $50,000-75,000 conduct an average of 16 searches a month, the most of any segment.

The catch? That base of current users is very small. Though the MMA, based in Boulder, Colo., offered no estimates, Eric McCabe, vp-marketing at JumpTap, a company that provides search software for wireless firms, said mobile search usage is now in the 3-5% range.   Continue reading

Zunch Communications, Inc. Serves as Click Fraud Subject Matter Expert in Lane's Gift's v. Google

Interactive marketing agency retained as subject matter expert on click fraud
By Counsel for the Class Members

DALLAS, Texas (PRWEB) August 1, 2006 – Zunch Communications, Inc., an international Interactive marketing agency that employs proven and ethical online solutions that deliver the highest ROI for its clients announced today it was retained as a consulting expert in the highly controversial Lane’s Gift’s v. Google case by counsel for the Class Members, several hundred thousand Google advertisers.

“Zunch’s expertise with click fraud issues was instrumental in providing me with meaningful insight as to the importance of Dr. Tuzhilin’s work to our clients, Google advertisers, and in preparation of my presentation to the court,” said Steve Malouf, Co-council for the Class Members. “The Zunch team did an exceptional job and should be extremely pleased with its efforts.”

On July 27, a federal judge in Arkansas approved the $90 million settlement between Google, Inc. and advertisers who said the search engine giant charged them for invalid clicks.  By settling the lawsuit, Google will pay $60 million in credits to advertisers and $30 million in legal fees.

Having forecast the huge impact click fraud would have on search advertising dollars, Zunch Director of Click Fraud Services and Pay Per Click Auditing Jeff Martin developed Click Fraud Detective™, a pay per click auditing system that immediately alerts users when suspicious activity is occurring in their PPC campaigns and assists them with recovering their lost advertising dollars.

“We are pleased to have offered our expertise in this area to the parties of the lawsuit.  Dr. Tuzhilion’s report, along with the approved settlement, demonstrates Google’s measures to filter out click fraud and other invalid clicks are reasonable,” Martin said.  “As Dr. Tuzhilin noted, however, due to the inherit limitations of the pay per click model, advertisers will still find themselves at risk to click fraud, despite Google’s reasonable efforts.  Because of this, Zunch will stand ready to assist advertisers in monitoring and auditing their PPC activity and guarding their budgets.”

About Click Fraud Detective™
Click Fraud Detective™ is a pay per click auditing system that helps advertisers easily identify, monitor and report fraudulent “click-throughs.”  The Zunch click fraud detection service provides advanced fraud detection technology that is customizable to each advertiser and can be used in conjunction with existing campaign and analytics tools.  Using state-of-the-art methods to tag Internet traffic as it comes to a website via pay per click campaigns, Click Fraud Detective™ empowers advertisers with the knowledge of exactly what is happening with their advertising dollars.  Armed with this information, advertisers can recover lost advertising revenue.  For more information, please visit http://www.clickfrauddetective.com.

Zunch SEO Report Card Featured in DM News

By Giselle Abramovich- DM News

Zunch Communications Inc. has introduced the SEO Report Card to let small and midsize businesses compete with their larger counterparts on the Web.

The report card grades SMBs on critical optimization aspects of Web sites.

Zunch created the SEO Report Card because we love helping businesses propel in the search engines," said John G. Sanchez, chairman/CEO at Zunch Communications, Dallas. "However, some small businesses may not have the budget for a traditional SEO agreement.

"That is where the SEO Report Card comes in," he said. "This report fills a void in the market, offering affordable and professional advice from proven experts to help these businesses actively compete on the Web."

The report card gives a broad analysis of a site and identifies any drawbacks that obstruct search engine optimization performance. There is a one-time fee for the report card. Zunch  is an international interactive marketing agency that offers SEO services.

"This comprehensive report, complete with handwritten notes, is perfect for new Web site owners or marketers who are ready to dive into SEO but could use direction from a leading expert," Mr. Sanchez said."

Study: Google Crushes U.S. Search Competitors

Google retained its commanding lead of the U.S. search engine market in June, when it handled almost half of all queries, leaving competitors such as Yahoo and Microsoft to fight for the remaining usage share, Nielsen/NetRatings said Friday.

Google processed almost 2.67 billion queries, or 49.4 percent of June's total, while Yahoo followed in a distant second place with 1.24 billion, for a 23 percent market share.

Microsoft's MSN unit (10.3 percent), Time Warner Inc.'s AOL LLC (6.9 percent) and IAC/InterActiveCorp's Ask.com (2.3 percent) rounded out the top five.

In terms of usage growth, Ask.com led the pack with 66 percent more queries than in June 2005, followed by Google (31 percent) and Yahoo (29 percent.) MSN and AOL had growth below 4 percent each.

Online ads delivered along with search engine results have become a multibillion dollar market in recent years, almost single-handedly fueling Google's impressive revenue growth and stratospheric stock price.

Drawn by the revenue opportunity, Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL and Ask.com have all invested heavily in their search engine services and search-based ad offerings.  -PC World

Zunch Blogging Platform Sympozeum Receives Rave Reviews from Website Services Magazine

Pete Pestipino, editor in chief of Website Service Magazine, recently requested a demo of Sympozeum-- the intelligent blogging platform by Zunch-- and here is what he had to say...

I had the opportunity to see Zunch Communications' new blog platform Sympozeum this afternoon. If you're about to install WordPress, sign up for a Blogger account or integrate another solution on your site, you may just want to hold off for a few weeks. Sympozeum is an enterprise level weblog platform (they will be offering a 'personal' version at the official launch) to help companies of any size or type share knowledge, build a reputation and receive feedback. You may be thinking; how is this different from any other blogging platform? Well, it's not - at least not on the surface. The real power of Sympozeum is in the features it offers blog administrators.  Besides the fact that you have on of the premier integrated marketing and development teams in the Web universe standing behind you in Zunch, the functionality even as a stand-alone product speaks for itself and will be attractive to all bloggers - both aspiring and established.

The features most appealing from my point of view:

- Search engine friendly: Immensely important to get your blog and all its content indexed.
- Ease of management:
post management and category management are very intuitive and simple to administer
- Blog Search: what's really lacking in most blog platforms is a viable search offering, Sympozeum has it.
- 24/7 Tech Support: If you break things as often as I do, it's nice to have qualified people at the ready

Interested in allowing Zunch to provide you with the proper tools and guidance to leverage the Internet's ability to bring customers to your site? We can also present you with a unique marketing strategy tailored towards your company's needs.  Contact us today and we'll have your blog up and running in no time!

Kudos Joe!

Tracy Clodfelter, ecommerce manager for FASTSIGNS®, said due to branding purposes it was important to establish consistency with the international websites.

Privacy and Search Behavior

By Laura Deerfield

The collection and storage of personal information, both with regard to statistical demographic data and with regard to search history, has been of concern to privacy advocates for some time – but was brought into sharp focus when the government asked for URLs and search data this January. Here is an article on the initial subpoena

This request was part of an attempt to begin enforcement of the 1998 Child Online Protection Act, but sets a precedent which could be applied to the enforcement of other laws. In this case, the government did not request personal data, nothing that could link a particular search to a particular individual - but there is nothing really preventing them from doing so, or from search data being requested in a criminal court case. And as tools like Google Desktop, toolbars, and MSN’s Open Platform become more widely used, the degree to which search engines are integrated into people’s personal lives will increase.

Before you dismiss this as irrelevant to you - don’t be so sure pornography laws don’t apply to you – the recent case with photographer Barbara Nitke established that the most conservative communities in the US can determine the standards by which your Website is judged. Are you sure that your online maternity clothing store won’t be considered obscene by a community in Utah, even though you are in New York? But search information could easily be collected in other types of cases by the government – such as national security. Such a possible use was specifically mentioned by the government. Do you sell anything which might be used by terrorists? That’s pretty broad – anything from books to box cutters could qualify.

But in regard to SEO specifically:
The demographic information that helps you find your customers and clients, can also be used against them. As people become increasingly aware of this, they will become more cautious about actively protecting their privacy. They may become more hesitant to reveal personal information or sign up for memberships, wary of efforts to collect information about them, however harmless the intentions. They will clean off cookies and clear caches more often – making data collection and statistical analysis more difficult, The most sophisticated and wealthiest visitors to your site will be the most difficult to track.

In short, being aware of how the law effects search engines can help you understand and keep in touch with the concerns of your customers and clients. You will need to establish yourself as trustworthy, and secure – while at the same time being open enough that search engines can find you. It’s a balancing act.

A lot of people see the ruling regarding the subpoena as a victory for privacy. Google was only required to comply with it partially. However, the judge pointed out, information collected by search engines with regard to web surfing and search behavior is not protected, private information. What he did determine, is that Google’s users had enough of an expectation of privacy that to demand search data would risk their reputation in the eyes of users, so that it placed an undue burden on the company to provide info that was available to the government through other means. This was not a right that was upheld, but a commercial interest. Which is still a good thing, but not quite the same.

A .pdf of the actual ruling his here.

SEO 101 Refresher Part 5: Link Building

By Fellow Zuncher Jeff Martin

Link building is one of the most confusing aspects of SEO for most people. Many don't realize that links provide the most weight in rankings for Google with Yahoo having less emphasis and MSN have even less than that. This is one of the reasons why you will more likely first see ranking in MSN, then Yahoo and finally Google.

Link building is the longest and most difficult process of SEO. Creating content is the second hardest. Why? Because, for the most part, who links to you is the part of SEO that you control the least. That's why Google relies on it as much as they do - its the least likely spot to be gamed. It can be done but it usually requires a great amount of resources and/or money.

Links fall into four categories:

1. Reciprocal linking. You exchange a link to a site for a link from their site to yours. More than likely, even if the site is similarly related, there will be very little gained from this kind of link. There are exceptions to this rule covered below.

2. Directory links. There are two kinds of directories:
a. 'Free For All' directories where there is not much of an editorial process and where many of the existing listings are scraped from other sites. This like has about as much quality as the standard reciprocal link.

b. Established editorial directories link-The Open Directory Project (ODP or DMOZ) or Microsoft's bCentral that go through an established quality check. These are the best types of directory links. Note: The ODP is a unique directory in that Google pulls information directly from it. This may have an added bonus. A link from the ODP is highly desirable, but is by no means a silver bullet.

3. One way links. Links from relevant web sites to your own that you do not need to return are the standard link that most people seek out. Links from .edu domains and some established .org domains are more sought after than others.

4. Trusted site links. A 'trusted' site is one that Google recognizes as a special site which are usually well established and have a strict editorial process. For example, news publication sites often fit into this category. Why? For an article to be written a journalist has to research the story, talk to experts and witnesses and have their facts checked then have an editor approve the piece. Because of all of the quality check that happens that means that a link from a site of this nature is more likely to be the most legitimate.

Each of these types of links can and does play a role in most link programs. Trusted links however, are not normally achieved through a link building program but through an interactive public relations campaign. Often it takes public relations folks (or ex-journalists) to know how to pitch a site or a person for an article.

Out of the rest of link types, links from .edu and established .org domains are next on the list. They are usually difficult to get, which makes them carry more weight than standard links.

In addition to the type of links, the link text used will have a significant impact on rankings. Ideally you will want to change out your link text to focus on a diverse keyword list. If you sell shoes you may want to have different link text variations such as:

- Store X - Tennis Shoes, Walking Shoes, Cowboy Boots and Dress Shoes
- Reebok Shoes, Nike Running Shoes, New Balance Tennis Shoes from Store X
- Discount Brand Name Golf Shoes, Running Shoes and Bowling Shoes

To help the process along, link tools can be purchased to help find links, track submittals and track who links to you and who links to your competitors and not to you. Many can be found by doing simple searches in your favorite search engine.

In the end it will take time and persistence to obtain a solid link base. Zunch offers special link building programs that can make the difference in your rankings. Wether your domain is brand new or you have existed for years and are looking to secure your visibility Zunch can help, contact us today.

Pay-Per-Call Gaining Attention of Advertisers

I attended a informational Webinar today on Pay-Per-Call.  It was sponsored by SEMPO and moderated by a representative from Ingenio, who currently has a Pay-Per-Call product that is designed for national and local advertisers.

Pay-Per-Call  is similar to Pay-Per-Click in many ways. Advertisers are able to select a category, establish monthly budget and bid against the competition. The major difference is the consumer will be directed to call a "vanity" phone number to place the order instead of visiting the company's Website.

The advertising dollars spent on Pay-Pay-Call has been projected to double over the next five years. Many major advertisers and advertising agencies have begun to add Pay-Per-Call to their marketing strategies. Zunch has tested this product and will offer it to clients that would benefit from this service.

Search Rankings
• Google- 48 percent

He’s absolutely right.  That’s why it is imperative to have your Website submitted to search engines and directories if you want your business to be successful.  Here at Zunch, we apply proven search engine optimization techniques to place our client's Websites in the top positions of all the major search engines and directories.

Zunch to Help U.S. Businesses Tap into Chinese Market

Our very own Terrence Ou had the grand opportunity to attend a breakfast with Deputy Secretary of Commerce Dr. David A. Sampson on Friday.

The Dallas-native returned home for a discussion with Dallas businesses about Bush’s American Competitiveness Initiative—which encourages American innovation and the strengthening our nation’s ability to compete in the global economy.

Zunch

Sampson said the key to surviving in the global competition is to export to India and China.  That’s right—China.  Zunch is already the leading U.S. search engine marketing company in China and continues to gain a great reputation for technology advancement as well as professionalism.

The Department of Commerce as well as the Consulate General in Shanghai have both been in talks with Terrence.  It is gratifying to know that the Department of Commerce believes that Zunch can provide the U.S. Commercial Service with an search engine marketing solution that is essential for every U.S. business trying to tap into the Chinese market.

We do.

Web Design Changes are Business Decisions

According to a recent study released by Forrester Research, some Internet companies still haven’t realized that Website designs are actually business decisions.

Analyst Nate Root says companies constantly change their Website designs to keep up with branding changes, add new features and fix problems but they never consider the financial impact of those changes.

Of web professionals at 89 of the companies that Forrester surveyed, only 13 percent of them measure the ROI of all the changes they make to their Websites.  While 50 percent of them measured the ROI of major changes, the rest of the professionals don’t measure the ROI of any of the changes.

Here at Zunch, our Website design team understands the business value of the design process by taking into account the External ROI as well as the Internal ROI.  We have continued to help companies avoid the damaging costs of bad Web design with our professional service—mainly because we know that usability is key.

There is simply no use in having a company Website if its design can result in the loss of potential sales and users can’t maneuver and find what they are searching for.

Zunch Leads the Way in China

I read a surprising article today that stated Google is the top-rated search engine in China.  Google outperformed Baidu, Sohu/Sogou and Alibaba/Yahoo in 11 of the 13 factors that were measured.  Astonishing- to say the very least.

According to the study, which was conducted by Keynote Systems, the most important “impact drivers” for Chinese searches are general search quality, home page design and image search quality.  Does that not have Zunch written all over it or what?  These findings validate the many reasons why Zunch packages its search engine optimization services, products and Interactive marketing skills in the booming Chinese market. Last year, we launched our Zunch Chinese language Website (thanks to our very own Terrence Ou) that has been very well received in the country.  The Zunch team also created the first Chinese search-friendly Content Management System as well as maintains an office in Shanghai. You want global, we’ll give you global.

Let’s get back to Terrence.  Terrence has been doing some wonderful things in China.  He has been spreading the news about Zunch’s amazing search engine optimization technology and services and just recently signed our newest client—one of the top 20 law firms in China.  Nice job T!

With Google leading the way in China-- this places Zunch in a position to execute at a much higher level.  We’ve been increasing our client’s ranking on Google for years— and now with China users conducting an overwhelming number of searches on the site, there’s no limit to what Zunch can--or better yet--will do for international and Chinese companies wanting to do business in China as well as Chinese companies wanting to do business outside of China.

As Chinese businesses aim to increase their online presence, they can count on Zunch to provide the tools and services they need to market effectively.

Stay in the loop of what Zunch is doing in the Chinese market by checking out Terrence’s experiences at http://www.zunchina.blogspot.com.  My fellow Zuncher is doing some really cool things.

Ahhhh…an international sip of Zunch.  Now that’s refreshing.

I've Been Zunched!

The fat lady has sang—I am an official Zuncher! I have been in my new role as Corporate Communications Specialist for more than a week now--and to say the least--I am ecstatic!!

What excites me the most is being afforded the opportunity to work for one of the world’s leading search engine optimization and Web design firms—and it doesn’t hurt that my fellow Zunchers are great people to work with. I can’t tell you how good it feels to walk into the office and know that everyone I work with loves what they do.

I have a confession to make. Before doing some major (and I do mean major) homework on Zunch’s operations, I didn’t have a clue about search engine optimization. I don’t even think I had ever heard of it before. I didn’t realize how important search engine rankings are for a company. What I did know, however, was if I were conducting an online search and a company’s homepage or product page wasn’t on the first of page of results—there was a good chance that LaKisha wouldn’t know about it. Who has time to search the other pages anyway?

That brings me to another reason why I am excited about being here. I am certain there are thousands of companies that don’t know the power of SEO. (SEO? I sound like I’ve been in the business for years…mmm I like the sound of that.) And I digress. Search engine traffic moves people around the Web faster than any form of navigation. The Zunch team has the tools and knowledge to position these companies as industry leaders. It has even developed some great products. (Jeff—the Click Fraud Detective—brilliant!)To make a long story short--I am very excited to be a part of the Zunch family. I look forward to working with clients and helping them with Interactive Public Relations as well as spreading the good news about Zunch and its offerings.

Great services. Great people. Great clients--- It’s no wonder we’re one of the world’s leading search engine optimization and Web design firms.
